What the app does
Paying a foreign merchant with a Maldivian card converts your money twice: the card network turns the amount into US dollars, then your bank turns those dollars into rufiyaa. Only the second rate is advertised, and it is not always the rate you get.
Laari works backwards from a charge that has already happened. Divide the rufiyaa that actually left your account by the dollars the card network billed, and you have the rate your bank really applied.
The scanner didn't read my slip
Use a full, uncropped screenshot rather than a photo of a screen, and make sure the rows showing the transaction amount and the billing amount are visible. Tap Show recognised text on the scan screen to see exactly what was read — if the amounts appear there but weren't filled in, send that text along and the parser can be adjusted.
You can always type the two figures in by hand instead.
Why is the dollar figure marked “estimated”?
Visa is the only card network that publishes its conversion rates. Mastercard and American Express charges are compared against Visa's rate for the same day, which is normally within a fraction of a percent but is not their actual rate. A charge already billed in US dollars needs no estimate and is exact.
Why doesn't the dollar amount change when I edit the rufiyaa?
Because it isn't derived from it. The dollars come from your foreign-currency amount at the card network's published rate for that date. Editing the rufiyaa changes the rate shown above it — which is the number your bank actually charged you.
My rate doesn't match my statement
Card networks price off the processing date, which is often a day or two after you paid. Try the dates either side. A remaining gap is usually a foreign transaction fee folded into the rate. Your statement is always the authority.
